Back a year ago a new rider to the motocross sport was riding on his favorite
track he was only 16 at the time...When he had fallen on a part of the track
where riders can't see. It was after a table top and a double in a blind spot
to the riders doubling it. He had fallen and was ok until another rider
landed on top of him crushing his helmet and fracturing his skull. My
personal friend who runs the flight part of Carolina's Medical center had
sent out a life support helicopter in hope to retrieve this young soul in
time to help his life. Due to the serious injuries he did not last over 5
days in the hospital due to serious brain injuries. He will be missed but the
thing that was missed the most were the flag men...where were they? Good
question. It was the day before a big event in which the track always has a
practice event. There should have been a flagman for every few turns. But
there was only 2-3 flagmen for a 1.5 mile MX track. Terrible story but the
worst part is a young fellow that was pinned under his bike not able to move
for an approaching rider if there was a flagman there, the rider may not have
landed on this 16 year old...He may have hit him but not landed directly on
his head. I'm sure this rider who hit him has to live with this guilt for the
rest of his life but also knowing that it was not just his fault.
Rich's Response: Damn it...sounds like typical bad jump design and
not enough flaggers. I hate hearing of this and you know that for everyone we
hear of there are several more riders killed and maimed due to bad jump design
and flagging. Hopefully, this track has changed the jumps and has enough
trained flaggers now.
