Motocrosser Jeff Emig was once again seriously injured, this time while practicing at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, California, on Thursday, May 4. Emig, who was just preparing to return to racing following a December 30 incident in which he broke both wrists, over-jumped an obstacle, separated from his bike, and fell to the ground, suffering a compound fracture to his tibia and fibula and injuring his back. He underwent surgery to his leg the same day, and then had back surgery on Saturday, May 6. The latter operation was a 13-hour procedure to replace and fuse his L-2 vertebra. "Everything went good," said Strategic 3 Team Coordinator Tony Strangio.

Emig's Strategic 3 team has been out of action for some time, with the other primary member, Phil Lawrence, still recovering from shoulder surgery. Lawrence expects to be back in action in approximately one month.
