Before you read further, I would like to make it clear that I am well aware of the risks involved in racing. My intent is to try to eliminate some of the needless and negligent risk. One of the most ignorant statements that I have heard people make, is that there are risks in racing. (To see Rich's vote for one of the worst editorials ever, click here.) I think everyone already knows there are risks in racing. However, I believe that these risks can be dramatically reduced. For example, if you miss a triple or double jump, the risk of serious injury is very high. On the other hand, if you miss a table-top, the risk is much lower. As the owner of Dyno Port Pipes, I am speaking out on the MX safety issue because I am not afraid to look out for the safety of kids and riders who are racing. I am very serious about this issue. I have contacted RIT in hopes of giving them a grant to study jump engineering and safety proposals for track design. I have also purchased this website, a secretary to coordinate the campaign, and will be running ads to promote this issue. Again, I am working to improve this industry, what are you doing? SAFETY CAMPAIGN UPDATES A big hit: The website is finally producing some positive track improvements. Thanks to all the riders and track owners who have taken this website as trying to improve the sport for the riders. The L.A. Times called me and also did an article on Supercross. Too bad industry leaders could not give them any safety improvements on the sport. Davey Coombs had some lame article about hiring Dr. Bodner (the same guy that had called me a few months previous and wanted me to pay his way to be the Supercross Doctor). I explained at the time that they didn't need a doctor to give drugs to the riders like the football industry. They needed to improve track design. Mr. Anton seemed surprised that Rick Seimans and myself were the only outspoken people looking out for less rider injuries. Wouldn't it be nice if top guys like Roger Decoster, Mitch Payton, Jeremy McGrath, and other team managers & pro riders would speak out for track improvements. They could listen to some of the NASCAR greats like Darryl Waltrip and Ricky Craven. These two guys feel strongly about driver safety and aren't afraid of the microphone. Miss 1: Davey Coombs' lame article trying to discredit myself and superhunky, rather than coming up with some solutions. Miss 2: Joe Hargett's (an ex-employee, who now works at No Fear) friends, some west coast track owners. One of them, known only by his e-mail name: West Coast MotoMan, threatened me to take down motocrossjumps.com or else. (Motoman was going to send more e-mails to NY state probably.) We have gone through an OSHA and Labor Board investigation over the past year. My company had to make several changes, we were in violation on some issues and made corrections. We now have a much safer work environment and have become more efficient in the process. (I agreed with OSHA on all problems that were pointed out and went several steps further than I had to in correcting them.) My point is, the whole reason for my website is for track owners to be looking out for rider injuries just like I should be looking out for any employee hazards. Interesting fact we learned: A person must be 18 or older to flag at a construction site. We asked the state for a ruling in writing on a 14 year old flagging at a race track (car or motorcycle). According to the labor laws, it is permitted, but they said the district attorney could prosecute any track owner for endangering the welfare of a minor (this could really come into play if a young flagger was injured or killed). Our company must train our workers for each job and have written policies. I'm sure this would also apply to track owners on the way they train flaggers. We definitely need 18 year-old trained flaggers. Another technicality, students 14-15, can only work 3 hours on school days, 8 hours on other days, and between 7am and 7pm (if your race goes to 8:00 you are in violation. Hit: We are looking forward to working with Dr. Jondy Cohen on his track injury study. Anyone interested in helping or who knows of districts who would like to work on this, please contact us. Lack of safety in the motocross industry has become a major issue. Many injuries and deaths can be prevented. Our goal is to improve motocross safety, protecting riders as well as the industry. We are looking for examples of injuries and negligence. If you have articles or other information that will help accomplish this goal please contact us. We would also like to highlight tracks that have made steps toward improving safety for riders. If you have any examples, please contact us. Please email or write with serious injuries: riders who have been seriously injured on doubles or triples or because of untrained flagger errors. ANY FEEDBACK THAT WE RECEIVE MAY BE POSTED ON THIS WEBSITE.You can request that your name be withheld. However, your feedback will have more clout if we post who it is from. Fax: (315) 253-3699
